As our raccoons continue transitioning from infants to more independent juveniles, they are becoming increasingly active and may display more defensive behaviours, including scratching and biting.
Effective immediately, bite gloves must be worn at all times when handling raccoons.
We have observed instances where latex gloves are being used alone. Please note that latex gloves do not provide adequate protection against bites or scratches. Proper bite protection is now required for all raccoon handling.
It is important to remember that any bite exposure requires involvement from Public Health. We have experienced an increase in bite incidents this year, and Public Health has expressed concern regarding their frequency.
Moving forward, if an incident occurs due to a volunteer not following established safety protocols, the individual involved may be required to communicate directly with Public Health regarding the situation.
Failure to follow protocols places both people and animals at risk and may also impact our ability to maintain care arrangements for the animals currently in our facility.
We are currently fortunate that Public Health has permitted us to continue caring for the baby raccoons in quarantine since April. This allowance should not be taken for granted.
